Constraining this project to two weeks, I embarked on a journey to create a single shot inspired by the film 'Ostrov' or 'Island' in English - A makeshift Orthodox Church sits on the Isolated Island of a Lake in the North. Few monks live there full time, though it's said that many travel to the Island to receive miracles.
Breakdown:
The church, bridge, and hero assets like trees and terrain are Modeled in Maya and Houdini.
With a quick texture pass and some Arnold shaders.
A few fab grasses were tweaked, along with various debris, and PaintFX flowers customized for dressing the scene.
Rocks were created and reduced in Houdini and scattered around, and a basic lake surface was generated here alongside the terrain.
This was all assembled in Houdini, then reassembled in Maya for the final rendered shot with Arnold.
I utilized some basic scripting throughout the project, and with AI tools assisting, it was really effective where needed. I was also able to significantly reduce the render times, by feeding data into the ai model, describing the details, aims, and subject of the shot. Then reporting back, and refining it down to a 3 minutes per frame at 720p which was very reasonable for laptop!
The resulting render was composited in Nuke with some basic compositing tricks and effects. I aimed to achieve as much as possible at render time, and managed to avoid relying on a grade/corrections in post.
There was plenty more I'd like to do, and will do on the next one!
This was a fun project and I hope to present some more shots, while learning more tools and methods!
